Malva pudding is a sweet pudding of South African origin. It is prepared with apricot jam and a little brown vinegar, which give this delicious traditional  dessert a caramelized texture.

Ingredients of Malva pudding

  • 1 tablespoon butter
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 2 eggs
  • 1 tablespoon apricot jam
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • ½ cup milk
  • ¼ cup brown vinegar
  • 1 cup flour
  • ¼ teaspoon salt

For the sauce

  • 1 cup heavy cream
  • ¾ cup sugar
  • 8 tablespoons butter
  • ½ cup hot water
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla essence

How to make Malva pudding

  1. Whip butter with sugar for 5 minutes.
  2. Add the eggs one at a time, and continue to whip well.
  3. Add the apricot jam and whip again.
  4. After that add the milk and the baking soda, then the brown vinegar.
  5. Add the flour gradually and mix continuously.
  6. put batter in a square greased baking pan.
  7. Bake for 45 minutes in the oven.
  8. Now mix all the sauce ingredients in a pan and boil them.
  9. After boiling remove from heat and cool down.
  10. Remove the pudding from the oven, put cold sauce on  the top.
  11. Set aside for 15 minutes before serving.
  12. Serve with custard or vanilla ice cream.
