A pineapple bun is a kind of sweet bun predominantly popular in Hong Kong and also common in Chinatowns worldwide. The bun is soft and slightly sweet and it’s topped with a golden crunchy, crumbly crust.

INGREDIENTS of Pineapple Buns (Bolo Bao)

DOUGH:

  • 2/3 cup heavy cream
  • 1 cup milk
  • 1 egg
  • 1/3 cup sugar
  • 1/2 cup cake flour
  • 3 1/2 cups bread flour
  • 1 tablespoon active dry yeast
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons salt
  • TOPPING
  • ¼ cup dry milk powder
  •  cups all-purpose flour
  • ½ teaspoon baking soda
  • ¼ teaspoon baking powder
  • 2/3 cup superfine sugar
  • ¼ cup vegetable shortening
  • 2 tablespoons milk
  • 1 egg yolk
  • 1/8 teaspoon vanilla extract

  • 1 egg yolk

How to Make Pineapple Buns (Bolo Bao)

    • put the heavy cream, milk, egg, sugar, cake flour, bread flour, yeast, and salt in the mixer.  Let it go for 15 minutes.
    • Cover the dough with a cotton cloth and place in a warm spot for 1 hour.
    • Now put the dough back in the mixer and stir for another 5 minutes.
    • Dump the dough on a lightly floured surface and cut into equal pieces.
    • Cover the buns with cotton cloth for raising for 1 hour.
    • Now Add the dry milk powder to a mixing bowl.
    • Add the flour, baking soda, baking powder, and superfine sugar. Stir to combine.
    • Add the shortening, milk, egg yolk, and vanilla.Make a dough.
    • Cover tightly with plastic wrap and rest for sometime.
    • Now preheat the oven to 350 degrees F.
    • Separate the topping dough into equal pieces and roll them into balls.
    • Brush with egg yolk and bake at 350 degrees for 15 minutes.
    • Now Pineapple Buns are ready to serve.
