Red Coconut Chutney is an authentic south indian spicy chutney. It is an ideal spicy condiment, typically served with south indian breakfast like idli, upma and pongal.

Ingredients of Red Coconut Chutney

  • 2 teaspoons Coconut Oil
  • ½ cup sambar onions
  • 4-5 Garlic Cloves
  • 5-6 Dried Red Chilies
  • 2 cups Fresh Coconut
  • small Ginger, chopped
  • Salt 

For tempering the chutney 

  • 2 tablespoons Coconut Oil
  • 1 teaspoon Mustard Seeds
  • 1 teaspoon Urad dal
  • 1 tablespoon pearl onions, chopped
  • 2 Sprigs Curry Leaves
  • 3 Dried Red Chilies
  • Water 

How to Make Red Coconut Chutney

  1. Heat 2 tsp coconut oil in a pan. Add pearl onions and garlic cloves, fry for 1 minute.
  2. Add dried red chilies and fry for few seconds until roasted.
  3. Add fresh coconut, ginger, salt and roasted onion garlic and chilies in blender.
  4. Add little water and make a fine paste.
  5. Transfer the chutney to a bowl.

Tadka

  1. Heat 2 tsp of coconut oil in a pan. Add mustard seeds and let it crackle.
  2. Add urad dal and fry for few seconds.
  3. Add chopped pearl onions. Fry until golden color.
  4. Add curry leaves and dried red chilies and fry for another few seconds only.
  5. Pour the tempering over the prepared chutney and mix.
  6. Serve with idlis and dosas.
